If you are anything like me, you have a lot of clothes. It's easy to chuck out a few items of clothes here and there but what is the impact?
Last year, I watched the ABC's War on Waste and I was horrified at the sheer volume of stuff we purchase and then, quite quickly, throw away. One episode focused on the fashion industry which once ran on a seasonal cycle and now cycles WEEKLY. This means, every week a new 'style' adorns shop windows and we, as hopeless consumers, purchase the goods. Of course, as quickly as the new clothes are purchased a new round of fresh fashion becomes available to us, rendering last weeks get-up, "so last week". Nina Gabor wrote a fantastic article on this episode - check it out here.
The War on Waste program and Nina both advocate for buying pre-owned clothes and cutting down on the quantity of items you acquire each pay-day. We at Ditchy, fully support this and are trying to get the global dance industry to take a similar stance.
If you are a dancer, you are well aware of the costs associated with dance performance and competition and the unnecessary volume of Lycra/sequins at your disposal. You have costumes that you have only worn once or twice (if lucky)! If you are like me, you have stored your costumes in a big bag, in the bottom of the cupboard at your parents house. They have not seen the light of day since 2006. Or, you are also like me and have costumes that have made their way to the bin because "when and where will you honestly wear an orange fishnet long sleeve midriff top again Lisa?". Sure the costumes in the cupboard are not in landfill but there are a lot of my costumes that have made the dump their final resting place simply because I have NO IDEA when they will be useful again. They are not broken or ruined. They just don't have an obvious reason for being in my life. So sad. So wasteful.
-List your costumes for free, for an unlimited amount of time, get paid when someone hires them and reduce landfill.
-Hire a costume via Ditchy for a fraction of the cost of buying new, you get to wear a fancy costume and reduce landfill.
