If you are anything like me, you have a lot of clothes. It's easy to chuck out a few items of clothes here and there but what is the impact?
Last year, I watched the ABC's War on Waste and I was horrified at the sheer volume of stuff we purchase and then, quite quickly, throw away. One episode focused on the fashion industry which once ran on a seasonal cycle and now cycles WEEKLY. This means, every week a new 'style' adorns shop windows and we, as hopeless consumers, purchase the goods. Of course, as quickly as the new clothes are purchased a new round of fresh fashion becomes available to us, rendering last weeks get-up, "so last week". Nina Gabor wrote a fantastic article on this episode - check it out here.
The War on Waste program and Nina both advocate for buying pre-owned clothes and cutting down on the quantity of items you acquire each pay-day. We at Ditchy, fully support this and are trying to get the global dance industry to take a similar stance.
If you are a dancer, you are well aware of the costs associated with dance performance and competition and the unnecessary volume of Lycra/sequins at your disposal. You have costumes that you have only worn once or twice (if lucky)! If you are like me, you have stored your costumes in a big bag, in the bottom of the cupboard at your parents house. They have not seen the light of day since 2006. Or, you are also like me and have costumes that have made their way to the bin because "when and where will you honestly wear an orange fishnet long sleeve midriff top again Lisa?". Sure the costumes in the cupboard are not in landfill but there are a lot of my costumes that have made the dump their final resting place simply because I have NO IDEA when they will be useful again. They are not broken or ruined. They just don't have an obvious reason for being in my life. So sad. So wasteful.
-List your costumes for free, for an unlimited amount of time, get paid when someone hires them and reduce landfill.
-Hire a costume via Ditchy for a fraction of the cost of buying new, you get to wear a fancy costume and reduce landfill.

It's that time of year again. The weather is warm, bodies are tanned and everyone is at the gym bulking or slimming. For some of us, we have a big event coming up and we are starting to prep. Prepping our bodies, choreographies, and costumes because.....it's almost time for the SYDNEY GAY AND LESBIAN MARDI GRAS!!!
Performing at Mardi Gras has been some of my favourite memories. My all time favourite person to perform for at this event is Paulini from Paulini Productions. She is Canberra's resident drag queen, fierce sambista and all around beautiful soul. In 2015, her float won Best Choreography at Mardi Gras and it was an incredible experience to have joined her on that journey.
Here are some of the fabulous behind the scenes pics of my Mardi Gras experiences dancing for the glorious Queen Paulini. Also, the dancers are from all over Australia including those from Kokoloco, Subsdance and Rhythm Brazil.
If you have been to Mardi Gras we would love to hear your stories and see your photos!
Now is the time where I talk about Ditchy and how we can help you out for your Mardi Gras get up and all other dance and DRAG stylings.
We 100% support the drag community and want Ditchy to be a place where queens can go to hire drag costumes, wigs and all, from other current or retired queens. Their costume needs are far beyond the average dance stage and we want to help. So if you are part of the drag community or have friends that perform drag, let them know they have a place to rent out their costumes, wigs, shoes etc. We also have some great costumes they may love that are not traditionally drag but are FAB-U-LOUS anyway.
We hope to see you at Mardi Gras and are looking forward to dressing you soon!
We have only be live for a few months and already we have 6 individual dancers who are renting their costumes on Ditchy.org. To you ladies, thank you!
These smart dancers have their costumes listed to hire so they can start making actual dollars from their costumes. They are also contributing to the Ditchy movement of disrupting the dance industry and saying to the world....."I'VE SPENT ENOUGH AND I WANT SOME MONEY BACK!".
Let's be real, Courtney, Ruth, Bec, Shally, Shalina and I are very likely to use the money to buy more costumes and lessons but hey, dance is our passion.

The Brisbane Zouk Festival was the first time we had a Ditchy stand at an event - and it was so much fun! Our aim was to raise awareness of our marketplace and I think we did that!
Two very gorgeous women asked if they could try on some of our costumes because they had NEVER worn a samba costume before. What happened next was dreams literally coming true (according to the ladies!). They popped on those costumes and found a whole new confidence. With their chests lifted, bums out and huge smiles, Tanja and Adriana shone like the goddesses they were in our beautiful costumes.
With their bling and feathers a photoshoot took place by the gorg Bob Mcgahan. Check out the stunning images below. If you are in Brisbane and would like to rent these costumes, click here now! Also, if you would like a photoshoot in any of our Brisbane costumes please contact us to discuss.
Ditchy is exactly about this! Making incredible costumes ACCESSIBLE to people. We currently have costumes available in Brisbane, Western Australia and Canberra with styles ranging from latin, samba and Bollywood. Our costumes will grow as our community grows. It is our community that lists their costumes to rent out to the people within their community.
If you would like to list your costume now (in any location around the globe!) click here.
If you would like to hire a costume click here.
We value and love the dance community and hope to continue to make sparkly dreams come true.
Did you know that the average samba dancer spends $200 per costume per performance (and that's just for a basic costume!)
They also make or bling up their costumes too, right? So many hours wasted...
Let's look at what you are probably spending per year on your blingy, feathery samba bits.
Your current spend on samba costumes:
4 x end of term performances per year at $200 per costume
= $800 per year!
Hours spent glueing individual crystals onto the costumes
= way too many!
How Ditchy can help you.
The average samba costume on Ditchy rents for approx $40 per night. If we do the calculations again let's see how much you save.
If you rent a samba costume from Ditchy:
4 x end of term performances per year at $40 per costume
= $160 per year!
This is a saving of $640 per year!!
